Frequently Asked Questions
What does AIUM Accreditation mean for my care?
Achieving accreditation from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) is a significant milestone in patient care. It is a voluntary peer-review process that involves a rigorous, top-to-bottom check-up on all aspects of our practice—including doctor qualifications, physical facilities, machine quality, and safety protocols. To retain this prestigious accreditation, our practice goes through an exhaustive audit every three years. For our patients, this provides reassurance that our care meets the highest nationally accepted standards for consistent excellence and the latest technology.
What advanced ultrasound technology and testing do you offer?
- We offer the latest in specialized perinatal equipment so advanced treatments can be implemented as safely and quickly as needed. Our state-of-the-art testing includes:
- 3-D and 4-D ultrasound equipment to help you better visualize the features of your developing baby
- Fetal Echocardiography for the early diagnosis of fetal heart problems
- Doppler Studies, including:
- Uterine Artery: Predicts the risk of developing preeclampsia in at-risk patients
- Middle Cerebral Artery: Diagnoses fetal anemia and helps manage growth restriction or low amniotic fluid
- Umbilical Cord Artery: Helps avoid fetal compromise and assess placental health
- Non-Stress Tests and Biophysical Profiles to ensure ongoing fetal well-being
- In-office diagnostic procedures like amniocentesis and intrauterine transfusions
What is the focus of a first-trimester ultrasound?
In the first trimester, we use advanced ultrasound to identify the location, viability, and number of fetuses present. Most importantly, it confirms the exact gestational age of your pregnancy. We can also provide early screening for chromosomal or genetic problems through specialized Nuchal Translucency (NT) screening.
Why is ultrasound imaging important in the second trimester?
During the second trimester, we perform a highly detailed anatomy scan to evaluate your baby's physical development head-to-toe. In addition to checking fetal anatomy, we also measure your cervical length. Evaluating the cervix is a crucial marker for identifying your risk of preterm birth.
What are you looking for during a third-trimester ultrasound?
In the third trimester, ultrasounds are primarily used to assess fetal growth and overall well-being based on your specific clinical needs. If we determine that fetal growth is restricted, our physicians will evaluate the blood flow using our advanced Doppler studies to determine the health of the placenta and adjust your care plan immediately.
How should I prepare for my ultrasound appointment?
We want your visit to be as stress-free as possible. Please keep the following in mind for your appointment
- Bladder: You do not need a full bladder for your ultrasounds at our office.
- Guests: You may be accompanied by up to two friends or family members (please avoid bringing younger children).
- Timing: Please try to arrive 15 minutes early for your first appointment, and allow about one hour for an average visit.
