About Dr. Akiyama

Megumi Akiyama, MD, of Desert Perinatal Associates in Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada, came to the United States after finishing high school in Japan with full tuition and boarding ambassadorial scholarship awarded by Rotary International.  

Dr. Akiyama completed her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees at State University of New York at Buffalo, and prior to medical school, she spent a few years teaching English as a second language to immigrant and refugee children in Buffalo public schools. She completed her medical degree at State University of New York at Buffalo, and finished her obstetrics and gynecology residency at University of Nevada School of Medicine, where she received numerous awards, including Phillip H. Goodman Resident Competition in Critical Appraisal and the first place in the Annual Resident Research Day Competition.  After the completion of residency, she pursued further training in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the University of Hawaii, during which her research abstracts were accepted by international conferences such as the annual convention of American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine and Society of Reproductive Investigation for oral and poster presentations. After spending three years in beautiful Hawaii, Dr. Akiyama decided to return to Las Vegas Nevada, which she considers her American hometown, to build her career as a high-risk pregnancy specialist.

In addition to providing evidence-based compassionate care to patients with various high-risk issues, Dr. Akiyama strives to promote healthy lifestyles and wellness as part of prenatal care not only for the prevention of pregnancy complications but also for the lifelong health of the patients and their babies.  

Whenever she has free time, she enjoys running, swimming, hiking, practicing modern and traditional yoga, cooking, eating out with friends, and playing with her 16-year old miniature schnauzer Buffy.
